The Ecosystem
We work as part of a structured ecosystem.
Future Lab carries every engagement and is supported by five layers of standing relationship. Each layer is governed differently, accountable differently, and entered through a different door. Four are open layers, entered by introduction. The fifth, Strategic Partnerships, is firm-to-firm and originated bilaterally.
Five layers
How the ecosystem is structured.
Each layer answers a specific need: capability we extend through, expertise we engage on demand, ventures we route opportunities to, and peer firms we work alongside on bilateral terms.
Layer 01
Ventures
Growth-stage ventures with paying customers and demonstrable traction in African markets. Through the Vantage Partner Programme they are routed to enterprise client opportunities, distribution channels, and growth capital introduced through engagements we lead. Some are co-created with us under a Venture Co-Creation engagement; some are independent operators we partner with case-by-case.
- You operate a venture with paying customers and demonstrable traction.
- Your venture serves a sector we work in, or one adjacent to it.
- Routing to enterprise opportunities through us would be commercially meaningful.
Layer 02
Channel Partners & Channel Partnerships
Hubs, programme operators, professional firms, and ecosystem platforms across African markets that extend the reach of engagements we lead. Channel Partners co-deliver as part of one engagement team. Channel Partnerships are the formal commercial agreements that govern those relationships, with named scope, named geographies, and explicit terms.
- You operate a hub, programme, or professional firm with established sector or geographic reach.
- Your clients ask for innovation, venture-building, or capability work you do not deliver in-house.
- You want to co-deliver as one engagement team rather than refer the work away.
Layer 03
Strategic Partnerships
Bilateral firm-to-firm relationships, formally documented, where another firm and Future Lab co-deliver as part of one engagement team on specific kinds of engagement. Each Strategic Partnership has a named scope, agreed governance, and joint accountability. Strategic Partnerships are not entered by introduction; they originate bilaterally between firms and are formalised over time.
Sankofa Lab is the relationship we work alongside where engagements draw on product and platform engineering capability. It is one capability area within the broader Sankofa Lab platform, governed by the firm-to-firm Strategic Partnership.
By bilateral agreement
Layer 04
Alliance Partnerships
Standing co-advisory relationships with other independent firms (strategy, advisory, capital) on specific kinds of engagement. Lighter than a Strategic Partnership, formal where it counts, episodic where it should be. Alliance partners are named on engagements when called for and remain in their own remit otherwise.
By bilateral agreement
Layer 05
Mavens Network
A curated network of senior individual specialists (sector, regulatory, technical, geographic) engaged on a project basis. We bring them in when an engagement calls for depth our internal team does not need to carry full-time. Banking regulation, telecommunications licensing, energy infrastructure economics, market-specific distribution dynamics: the breadth varies, the seniority does not. Participation is by invitation following review.
- You are 15+ years into a specialist domain relevant to the sectors we work in.
- You want project-based engagements, not retainer or full-time.
- You are willing to be reviewed before being added to the panel.
How the network is governed
Curation over aggregation.
A small, vetted network is more useful than a large, open one, for clients who need accountability, and for participants who want their inclusion to mean something.
Selection
Reviewed in.
Every participant is reviewed against the standards we hold ourselves to. Expression of interest does not equal admission. Some applications are declined; some are deferred; some lead to a working conversation.
Engagement
Project-based and named.
When the work calls for it, we engage you on a specific engagement under specific terms. You are named on the engagement and accountable to the outcome alongside us.
Commercial
Transparent terms, agreed up front.
Every engagement under the network has its commercial structure agreed before it begins: fee, share, equity, or hybrid. We do not work on speculative arrangements.
